Creative's Zen Micro is a success which, for comparison,
beats the competition hands down. Available in ten colours
(most of which are quite attractive) this is the ideal
digital jukebox for those whose music collection is modest,
but not too big, and whose wallets cannot stretch to iPod
standards.
The design of this piece of kit is stunning. To start
with, it is very diddy and easily fits into any pocket, and
Creative's initiative to include the headphone port at the
top of the system is of obvious benefit. I have the black
version which is undeniably very sexy. The screen glows a
vibrant blue colour when in use, and the outer rim of the
machine also glows for a neat effect. The touch pad is also
a clever feature which, although slightly difficult at
first, makes handling this player easy and enjoyable. There
is also a feature with which the player can easily be locked
so buttons aren't accidentally pressed when in a pocket. The
whopping five gigabytes of storage (although it is closer to
4.7GB, to be precise) is ample space for most music
collections; this holds a little over 1000 average mp3
tracks or around 2,300 tracks if converted into Windows
Media Audio format. The battery life is what it says on the
box, around twelve hours, and the fact the battery is also
removable is a great advantage as it allows batteries to be
swapped at any time. Sound quality is also excellent with
great clarity; the provided earphones deliver this sound
well though they are slightly uncomfortable.
The supplied goodies are also very useful. Included is a
sturdy, white case which the player slips into - this can be
converted into a desk stand for charging or a belt clip for
on the move. Also there is a silky drawstring bag for
keeping your Zen Micro nice and safe. The manual is large
although mostly in foreign languages - however the
electronic version of the manual in pdf. format is easy to
navigate and use. The supplied software is also good for
creating playlists, ripping CDs and synchronising data from
your computer to the player. Included in the software is
Creative's MediaSource and also Windows Media Player 10, my
preferred piece of software, which also converts tracks into
WMA 64kbps files without compromising sound quality. As
standard, one battery is included although with limited
edition Zen Micros (the first 40,000 orders, to be precise)
an extra battery is included free for up to 24 hours of
battery life in one go.
Obviously, for those too pretentious or ignorant to know
any better, the iPod would probably be the better choice.
However, it is clear that the Zen Micro beats the mini Apple
competitor with longer battery life, more choice of colours
and an extra gig of space, all for the same price (or less).
This is probably Creative's best mp3 player to date and is
perfect for anybody who wants music on the move.

All my mates hav ipods, i wanted to be different and hus
laughing now!!
the creative zen micro is amazing, i have a black 1, so
there is great contrast between the black front, white back
and mesmerising blue light!
quality is brilliant and has been perfect so far, i hav
over 1000 songs on wma format and it isnt even slowing down!
also its tiny and fits into your pocket wonderfully!
the touch senstive pad is really good once you get used
to it!
the zen micro is better than most of its competetors in
almost everyway:- looks, performance,batterylife,reliability
and originality!
this product is top stuff! but if you want to take my
advice, dont even install the creative software, its well
you might say not good. use windows media player, select the
songs you want, add to sync list, and syncrinise to device!
its that simple!
and thanks to amazon, i ordered this product from
them, and it was at my house in just over 48 hours!
so buy this product, be different and enjoy!

I developed a serious need for an mp3 player over the
last few weeks. however, something about the i-pod bugged me
- too simple a design? too many people already have one? too
expensive?!? the creative zen micro was just what I needed -
compact, funky, PC-friendly, and a bit different from the i-pod
family...
when you get one in your hand, it really is a delight to
use - the manual is rendundant! the sound quality is
definitely comparable to a CD walkman (128kbs MP3, I think),
and it's really easy to use... as an mp3 novice, it was a
cinch to rip tracks from my CDs, and took less than 5 mins
to transfer the first 200 tracks onto my Zen Micro...
I personally don't like the headphones, so invested
another 30 quid in Sennheiser PX100's - definitely
worthwhile - extra volume, extra clarity... I'm so glad I
bought this!
Is this an iPod but cheaper?, February 3, 2005

The answer is technically yes. This piece of
technological wonder and marvel is what should be known as
GENIUS!
An iPod micro is more expensive than this, but this has
basically identical features and 1GB more memory, that is
why I chose it, it makes sense. There are a few quips i have
about this:
The headphones supplied with it are rubbish(how can anyones
ear hole be that big i dont know)
The scroll button in the centre is hard to use and takes a
lot of getting used too(helps if you turn the sensitivity of
it down to low)
The fact that this piece of equipment doesnt have the
reputation of an iPod makes you feel a bit put off.
Dont be put off though this is one piece of equipment that
will not let the ipod win, it is brilliant, if money is no
object then go for an Ipod Mini but if you are on a tight
budget then go for this, it makes sense, if you think about
it.
Go for it I say
